GREEN KIDS AREA – Where kids just want to have fun

The Green Kids Area is sited at the back half of the Greenpeace Field and will be open from 8am till 9pm each day. It is an independent area, run directly by the Green Fields. Our theme this year is Responsibility, Regeneration, Reconciliation. In the world today it feels like these are pretty important things to promote global education and happiness. And talking of health,  we are encouraging everyone to help make Green Kids Field, Glastonbury, the first Smoke Free Festival Field in England (probably in the world). There will signs and sand buckets around the area to help encourage people to stub out before settling in the field; we are asking everyone to treat the kids and the field with respect.

All activities in the Green Kids Field are free of charge. The area includes a children’s Performance Marquee, Comedy workshops, Children’s Art and Craft Marquees (see the notice boards for specific times of workshops), and smaller craft tents and many outside activities. There will be activities and events to amuse and entertain children of all ages, and a café and picnic area provided by Tom’s Toasties. The fantastic Baby Robotic Elephant will be on parade around the field.

Other activities for this year include The Book Club, Making Stick People, Pottery, Gymnastics, Storytelling, Robotics, Facepainting, Dark Age Jewellery, and Olde World Games with Chas and Sandy, including their wonderful bowling alley.

On the music front we have a full array of DJ workshops – came and play with all the gadgets and gismos – plus songwriting, rap and poetry and music performances with Barney and his crew. Plus this year, performances by Mel and Ky.

In the Games arena we have board games, jumping games, all sorts of games. Once again, incredible sock wrestling is back – don’t miss the World championships on Sunday afternoon! And each morning we start with Gymnastics in the Performance marquee. We are having a brilliant horizontal climbing wall that all ages and abilities can have a go on. The Camera Obscura is back again this year to amuse and delight.

And to celebrate the end of the weekend, on Sunday afternoon between 3pm-5pm, we will be having a great big outdoor party, for everyone to join in. All the acts and fun of the field will be there – come and join us!

The New Ark – Cadmus

We have a ship in the Green Kids Area – The CADMUS, based on the design for an ancient Ark. It will be “crewed” from 8am to 9pm each day, and can only be used during these times. The rules of the Ark are as follows: no children under the age of five to be on the steps or decks; no climbing on the outside of the frame; no jumping off it; no smoking, drinking or glass bottles to be brought onto it; and no interfering with the play of other children. Between 8am and 7pm each day the Cadmus is for the use of 5 to 14 year olds only; from 7pm to 9pm it’s for 14 to 17 year olds and adults. The views around the site you get from the top deck are worth the climb. UNDER FIVE’S ARE NEVER ALLOWED ON ANY PART OF THE SHIP. The under 5’s have their own sandpit in the safety of the enclosed Toddler Area. Glastonbury 2015 001

We are having some very special things this year : –

Chris Brown
Somewhere in a Green field of Joy and Happiness, there lurks DANGER. Anne Bonny is a female pirate trying to steer her crew between the battling armies of the French and English in 1720. Land battles, Sea battles, Traitors, and Double Crossings are at every turn. They are looking for the Governors treasure. STOLEN. Only the dog knows the secret of where it is hidden.
Based on true historical characters the story of Anne Bonny features an epic soundtrack of music and sound effects, as miniature figures and model tall ship act out the drama against a backdrop of castle and coastline scenery. Your Host, Major Harvey Wal-Banger, will explain the finer details of war and death in an otherwise peaceful field. Three shows per day: Thursday – Sunday. See notice board for timings.

Barney DJ Skills
The Green Kids Field will be providing DJ and Music-Making workshops in their performance marquee this year. Here, young aspiring musicians will, whatever their ability, be able to learn in any style how to spin the decks, sing, rap, play guitar, drums, bass, keyboard, as well as explore all manner of music technology under helpful supervision of the DJ Skills crew (they have been called the best DJ’s on site…).
Write a Rap in half an hour, give your confidence a boost, or just jam along. No previous experience necessary, fun assured.

Living History Workshops “Ancient Crafts with Minimal Impact”
A range of eco-workshops for all ages including woodwork, leatherwork, chalk carving and pewter jewellery – plus the ever-popular ‘Hitting Things With Hammers’ for the little people. See notice board for timings.

Making Stick People
We will be making stick people puppets using sticks as well as moss, feathers, leaves and flowers. Watch these stick people come to life, full of character, no two ever the same! They’ve even been known to dance to some awesome bands at the festival! Hours of fun.

Mal and Ky
All the way from Australia, Mal and Ky will rove around Green Kids providing brassy fun with their slide trumpet and green trombone. Wandering sea shanties, pop up fanfares and other aural delights. Merry marches and spontaneous soundtracks. And if you have a request, they’ll give it a go! In quieter moments, you may even find them tinkling on thumb piano, grooving on guitar and violin or even giving lessons on leaf blowing! Plus Beatboxing workshop.

Another Fine Mess Productions
This year, Ben Edmonds (aka Mr. Pineapplehead) and Carl Anderson will premier their new performance, ANOTHER FINE MESS PRODUCTIONS. This Laurel and Hardy-inspired double act/comedy walkabout features these highly skilled handymen litter-picking, bunting-hanging and indulging in some general DIY with their vintage physical comedy clown routines. What could possibly go wrong?! Will they be able to dance themselves out of trouble this time? Fun for all the family!

Arbor Antics “Misspent Youth” is proud once again to be in the Green Kids Field. They will be providing a 10 pin bowling alley, no electricity required, and a selection of traditional games to suit any age or ability.

Toddler Space
An enclosed space for the very little ones age 0 – 5; it includes a sandpit, water play, dressing up, soft toys, games, stories and a shady space for resting and quiet times, next to Tom’s Toasties baked spud stall.

Comedy Club 4 Kids
Do you want to be a stand-up comedian? Learn from the pros and be taken through the process of coming up with material, honing it, and performing it onstage. They will cover joke writing, storytelling and improvisation, teaching kids aged 7-15 how to find the funny in their own experiences and turn it into confidently-delivered stand-up and sketches.

Magpie Dragonteller and the Islands of Ganu Calvin Cumiskey (Magpie) returns to the magical realm of Green Kids for more fantastic adventures.  You are all invited to set sail with the Pirate King of Fools on a quest for dragons, faeries and giants from around the world.  Interactive stories come to life with puppets, masks, music, dance, games and giggles.  Come join us, treasure seekers!

Toilet Twinning
We have joined up with the Charity Campaign for “Toilet Twinning”. Around our lovely little clean and beautiful compost children’s toilets we will be showing pictures of the awful conditions that a lot of children in the world have to endure for their toilets. The idea is to realise how lucky we are to have clean water and proper toilets, and how we have to help the rest of the world get them as well. Not only do we have to learn to look after the creatures of the planet, we also have to learn to look after all the people on the planet – more lives are saved every year through clean toilets, than anything else. And more lives are lost each year through bad sanitation and dirty water, than anything else.
